Scene probably depicting Blood Brook (now Bloody Brook), which joins the Connecticut River just south of the town of Lewiston, now a part of Norwich, Vermont. The bridge in the distance connects Norwich with Hanover, New Hampshire, then a rural college community. In the foreground a man with a walking stick stops to talk to a man on a horse, and farther down the road there is a man driving a cart pulled by a white horse.
