    Description:
Beneath the imposing architectural structure of the Virginia War Memorial stands a huge marble female figure representing Memory, a symbol of the pride and sorrow of the mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters of Virginia's war dead. Memory stands with her head bowed and her proper left hand raised to her heart. The figure is installed on a round marble base adorned with an eternal flame, the Torch of Liberty. Below the base is a pool containing war relics from battlefields all over the world. The names of Virginians who died in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War are etched on glass panels that line the walls of the Virginia War Memorial.

    Remarks:
The sculpture of Memory was modeled in plaster by Leo Friedlander and was enlarged in marble by architectural carvers, Joseph Campo and William Knapp. The carving began onsite on Oct. 1, 1955, but the sculpture was not finished until after the Feb. 29, 1956 dedication of the Virginia War Memorial. Originally, the Virginia War Memorial was designed to honor Virginians who died in World War II and the Korean War, but later it was expanded to include Virginians who died in the Vietnam War. IAS files contain a brochure on the Virginia War Memorial.
