    Remarks:
The gates were designed by the university's architect, John Galen Howard. Cummings designed and sculpted the marble panels. California Artistic Metal & Wire Company constructed the bronze gateways. $10,000 was donated to the University by Mrs. Jane Sather for the construction of the gates, in honor of her husband Peder Sather, a California banker. There was controversy over the nude figures on the panels after they were installed in December 1909, and in May 1910 they were replaced with plain marble panels. The relief panels were placed in university storage. In 1977 two of the panels were rediscovered in storage. The other six panels, discovered at a local monument company, were returned to the university. In Dec. 1979 all eight panels were re-installed on the gate pillars. The original gates had four large granite urns topping the pillars. IAS files contain copy of Nelson R. Ober's manuscript "Sather Gate and Berkeley's Errant Nudes", 1994.
