    Description:
Site-specific installation on the shores of Lake Union. "A comprehensive unified artwork incorporating native plants, recycled paving materials and photographic images to provide an historical time line to the site. Beginning at the shoreline with images and text of the first people to live by the lake, the primary path leads visitors through an historical walking tour of the development of Lake Union." The site includes a wooden bench, 62 silk-screened photographic images on tile adhered to boulders, and a hatchcover with a relief map of the Lake Union area of Seattle. The hatchcover is laid flush with the concrete walkway; bronze pieces are embedded in the concrete around the cover, creating a compass rose in the sidewalk. A concrete stairway leading down to the installation is embedded with railroad and bicycle artifacts which have been cast in bronze.
The 62 silk-screened photographic images depict the area in historical settings. Images include scenes of wharfs and buildings along the lakeshore. Trains, streetcars, airplanes, seaplanes and boats are featured. Also depicted are a damaged bridge, a train trestle and memorabilia from a local restaurant. Figures portrayed in the images include a couple, John and Madeline, the last two Lake Union Indians, hosting a potlatch. Two children on the lakeshore, and local restauranteur Ivar Haglund are also portrayed.

Located North shore of Lake Union at NE Northlake Way & 4th Avenue NE, Seattle, Washington
    Remarks:
The installation was commissioned by METRO, the municipality of Metropolitan Seattle as part of a project to separate storm water from sewage flows. The cleaner water collects in the north end of Seattle and travels through pipelines to an outfall in Lake Union. The installation site is just north of the outfall. The wooden bench was designed by Conner in collaboration with the Center for Wooden Boats. The photographic images on tile were made by Brodax. The hatchcover was fabricated by David Gulassa and Company. The bronze artifacts embedded in the stairway were fabricated by Caldwell. IAS files contain copy of related Seattle Arts Commission project description. IAS files contain complete transcription of all text engraved in brick paving, including inscriptions in the Indian language Lushootseed.
