Sculpture is a copy of one by Henry Kirke Brown located in Union Square, New York City. C. T. Willis, Inc. was contracted to make, deliver and erect the statue through the architectural firm of Trowbridge and Livingston. The architectural firm of Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson and the landscape architectural firm of the Olmstead Brothers, who were involved in the rebuilding of the Military Academy, were consulted regarding the placement of the sculpture. The base is made of granite quarried from Deer Park, Maine. Sculpture was moved from the traffic circle near Trophy Point to its current location in front of Washington Hall.
