Inscription:  American Bronze Co, Chicago (On front of base:) (At top, raised lettering:) C. S. A. (Lower middle:) IN HONOR OF THE/CONFEDERATE HEROES/OF CLEVELAND COUNTY/1861-1865 (Bottom, raised lettering:) LEST WE FORGET (On rear of base:) Erected By The/Daughters of the Confederacy/Nov. 21, 1906 (On plaque, rear of base:) Restored by/the Cleveland County Guards/Chapter #443/of the United Daughters/of the Confederacy/September 15, 1991 Founder's mark appears. Description:  A bearded Civil War soldier stands holding a rifle, with butt in his proper right hand, forestock in his proper left hand. He wears a slouch hat, a blanket roll from his proper left shoulder to his proper right hip, and a haversack on his proper left hip. The sculpture is mounted on a base with a cap piece and a stepped bottom. In bas-relief on the front of the base is a draped Confederate flag. Funds for the sculpture were raised by Cleveland Guards Chapter 443 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. In 1991, Chapter 443 had the sculpture restored by Karkadoulias Bronze Art of Cincinnati, Ohio. The sculpture stands in Court Square near the courthouse building, which since 1975 has been home to the Cleveland County Historical Museum. IAS files contain a related excerpt and photocopies of two historic photographs of the sculpture, one taken during the dedication ceremony, from "Our Heritage: A History of Cleveland County," Shelby, NC: Cleveland Daily Star, 1976, pg. 30-31. IAS files contain a letter from Cleveland Guards Chapter 443, United Daughters of the Confederacy, dated May 18, 1994, which includes sculpture information provided by the Cleveland County Historical Museum.
