The sculpture honors Confederate soldiers from Dinwiddie. The cost of the sculpture was $2,000, one half of which was paid for by the County of Dinwiddie and the other half of which was raised by the Dinwiddie County Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The sculptor, Ben Campbell, was employed by Burns and Campbell, of Richmond, Virginia, from whom the monument was purchased. The inscription on the base was composed by Senator Charles T. Lassiter.
