Gaetano Cecere The Morehouse Co., N.Y. (Above Victory's head:) IN HONOR OF THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF CLIFTON WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WAR I, WORLD WAR II, KOREA, VIETNAM (Veterans names on sides and rear of shaft) signed Founder's mark appears.
Description:
At base of tall shaft, a full-length robed female figure stands carrying circular shield with an eagle and stars design in her left hand and a sword in her right. She wears sandals. At the top of the shaft is a classically designed bronze urn. On the sides of the shaft are two raised laurel wreaths cut from the granite shaft. Names of veterans listed above the wreaths. On the back of the shaft is a bronze wreath with oak leaves and acorns on one side; laurel leaves on the other. Granite and concrete steps lead up to the shaft.

Remarks:
It is believed that the original inscription referred only to World War I; the additional wars were a later addition. IAS files contain copy of 1929 dedication program, which lists Cecere as sculptor; William E. Brown, as supervising architect; and Andrew Livingstone as "erected by" contractor. The sculpture was restored in 1993 and IAS files contain copy of May 31, 1993 Rededication program.
