Inscription:  (On each side of base:) MAINE (Above the Great Seal of the State of Maine:) DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR (On front of base, incised lettering:) IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE HEROIC SOLDIERS OF MAINE WHO DIED THAT THE REPUBLIC MIGHT LIVE, AND OF THOSE WHO DARING TO DIE, YET SURVIVED THE TORTURES AND HORRORS OF ANDERSONVILLE PRISON 1864-1865. unsigned Description:  A Civil War soldier stands with head bowed and his hands resting on a pole in front of him. The sculpture is mounted upon a tapered base with one bottom step decorated on each side with a military symbol in relief. The symbols are: crossed swords, crossed muskets, crossed cannons, and crossed anchors. On one side of the base is the Maine state seal in bronze. Jesse K. Brown of Augusta, Maine supervised the building of the sculpture. The sculpture was fabricated by C. F. Taynton and Company of Hallowell, Maine.
