    Description: 
    A Civil War soldier stands with head bowed and his hands resting on a pole in front of him. The sculpture is mounted upon a tapered base with one bottom step decorated on each side with a military symbol in relief. The symbols are: crossed swords, crossed muskets, crossed cannons, and crossed anchors. On one side of the base is the Maine state seal in bronze.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture cost $3,700 and was installed by the State of Maine in memory of 252 Maine soldiers who were prisoners of war at Andersonville Prison. Jesse K. Brown of Augusta, Maine supervised the building of the sculpture. The sculpture was fabricated by C. F. Taynton and Company of Hallowell, Maine. IAS files contain a related article from Southern Living (June 1993): pg. 8; an Andersonville Official Map and Guide; a National Park Service Classified Structure Field Inventory Report, Dec. 1975; and an excerpt from Bill Burnett's "Andersonville Monuments," Andersonville National Historic Site Library.
