    Provenance:
Formerly located Grand Army of the Republic Hall, Corner of Limerock & Union Streets, Rockland, Maine 04841 1912-1959.
    Remarks:
Commissioned under the auspices of the Edwin Libby Post No. 16, Grand Army of the Republic and the Rockland Soldiers and Sailors Monument Association. The Women's Edwin Libby Relief Corps raised additional funds and the City of Rockland appropriated $1,000 to augment two accounts begun about the early 1890s. The final cost was $5,215.62. The mast, a gift of Arthur Wardell, was built by A. W. Wardell. The Boston Art Metal Company created the Victory figure and the Bodwell Granite Company did the stone work. The original site at Limerock and Union Streets was the meeting hall for the Edwin Libby Post. In 1959, the Post vacated the hall and sometime thereafter, the sculpture was relocated to their new headquarters now the Shore Village Museum. IAS files contain a related article from the Courier-Gazette (Rockland, ME), June 18, 1912, and a balance sheet submitted by E. A. Butler, treasurer of the Monument Association. The arm of Victory is a replacement. Oct. 1994 SOS! survey reports that sculpture had been recently cleaned.
