Remarks:
The sculpture is a copy of a stone sculpture in a Stratford-upon-Avon church, done by Garrett Jenson (or Janson) shortly after Shakespeare's death in 1616, supposedly based upon an actual mask of his face. In 1814, George Bullock made two plaster copies of the Jansen sculpture, one of which was eventually given to the City of San Francisco's Public Library by the mayor and citizens of Stratford-upon-Avon. From this copy, artist Melvin Earl Cummings made a new mold and plaster cast from which to cast the Park's bronze sculpture. The Garden and bust were dedicated on July 9, 1928. IAS files contain: transcription of text on one wall plaque; excerpts from Merrill A. Reed's "Historical Statues & Monuments in California," pg. 159-160; and The Municipal Employee (Aug. 1928), and article from The S.F. Progress, July 5 (?), 1978.
