Remarks:
Von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a German geographer and naturalist who pioneered the science of plant ecology. In 1799, von Humboldt embarked on a five-year exploration of South America to study "all the forces of nature." His life work culminated in his five-volume opus "Comos," an examination of the physical universe. After his death, the von Humboldt monument association commissioned sculptor, Gustaf Blaeser, who knew von Humboldt, to create a bust. Blaeser created the bust using a cast of von Humboldt's head taken after his death.
