The fire hydrant painting project was sponsored by the Brisbane Federated Women's Club as part of their Bicentennial Beautification project. Members of the club were assisted in the project by members of the community. The Betsy Ross fire hydrant was damaged in a vehicle collision on June 29, 1987, and was lost for a time, but was later recovered. The Betsy Ross hydrant is one of three placed in "Plug Preserve".
