Inscription:  unsigned Description:  A bust of Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health, mounted atop tall base. Subject:  Mythology -- Classical -- Hygeia Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- Georgia -- Atlanta Sculpture Owner:  Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, Georgia 30333 Remarks:  Gift of Dr. John E. Skandalakis in appreciation for the warm welcome and success that he found in the United States, and because he wanted to "bring together the ancient Mecca of medicine - Greece - with the new Mecca of medicine - the United States." Dr. Skandalakis ordered the bust at his own expense, with the instructions that the sculptor use marble from the same area of Greece where the original bust of Hygeia was found. Nearby brass plaque reads: Hygeia Greek Goddess of Health Presented by John E. Skandalakis, M.D. December 17 1970.
