    Description:
A memorial park honoring the 184 individuals who lost their lives when the hijacked American Airlines flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. Each victim is memorialized with a stainless steel bench inscribed with the victim's name. The benches are arranged in chronological order according to the victim's date of birth. A two foot high granite Perimeter Bench is marked with slabs of black granite and steel inlays bearing each birth year. Behind the stainless steel benches is a concrete Age Wall that begins at three inches high for the youngest victim and ends at seventy-one inches high for the oldest victim. Running diagonally across the memorial park are Age Lines made of parallel steel rails set in the ground to mark the path of flight 77 into the Pentagon. The Age Lines mark the ages of the victims, from the youngest at three years to the oldest at age seventy-one. A Zero Line at the entrance to the memorial park is a gray stone border set in the ground and inscribed with "September 11, 2001 9:37 a.m." The gray stone was cut from the Pentagon's limestone walls damaged in the attack. Planted throughout the park are eight-four paper bark maple trees, chosen for their colorful orange leaves that last into late autumn.
