    Remarks:
This sculpture honors the living and dead Lee County veterans who served in World Wars I and II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. Although such a memorial had been discussed for years, no action was taken until Nancy Cope's junior history class at Lee Senior High School began working with the idea. Billy Ray Cameron, former national commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, organized the memorial committee, which included students from the history class. Funds from the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina enabled the start of the memorial project. The memorial was completed with additional funds from the community, donations of materials from area merchants, and donation of labor by city employees. Cost: approximately $50,000. The sculpture was designed by Will Bayer, who was a student at West Lee Junior High at the time. IAS files contain related article from The Sanford Herald (Sanford, NC), May 27, 1989, pg. 1A.
