    (By front gates:) IN MEMORIAM UNION SOLDIERS OF TENNESSEE OCTOBER 15, 1896 (On front, right side:) REST ON EMBALMED AND SAINTED DEAD,/DEAR AS THE BLOOD YE GAVE,/NO IMPIOUS FOOTSTEP HERE SHALL TREAD/THE HERBAGE OF YOUR GRAVE:/NOR SHALL YOUR GLORY BE FORGOT/WHILE FAME HER RECORD KEEPS,/OR HONOR POINTS THEE HALLOWED SPOT/WHERE VALOR PROUDLY SLEEPS. // TENNESSEE FURNISHED FOR THE UNION ARMY 31092 MEN. Casualties 6776 (On front, left side:) To the Tennessee Men who Laid down Their Lives A Voluntary Sacrifice on Freedoms After Who endured with fortitude Temporary Banishment from Their Mountain Homes who followed the Flag They Loved on scores of Battle Fields and who fell valiantly contending for the National Unity.     Description: 
    A monument consisting of a miniature medieval fortress with an inner room, stained glass window, and mosaic star. The fortress has crenelated bastions, turrets, corbelled table, decorative frieze, round-arch openings, and rusticated wall surfaces. At the top of the central turret is a Union soldier standing at parade rest. The moustached figure wears a uniform that includes a long coat, a cape, and a cap. His left foot is slightly forward and extends over the edge of the circular plinth. He holds a rifle in front of him with both hands on the barrel and the rifle butt resting by his feet.

    Remarks: 
    This monument replaced the original, which was destroyed by lightning Aug. 22, 1904 (TN000127). Monument cost $4,300 and was funded by the federal government. IAS files an excerpt from Frederick C Moffatt's Tale of Two Monuments: Civil War Sculpture in Knoxville published in the East Tennessee Historical Society's Publications 50 (1978).
