Remarks:
The Zozobra or "Old Man Gloom," as it is known was first created in 1924 or 1926 by Will Shuster, Gus Baumann and poet Witter Bynner. A Zozobra is built and burned at the City of Santa Fe's yearly Fiesta to exorcise anguish, despair and gloom. Shuster and Baumann built the Zozobra until the 1960s, when rights to the Zozobra were turned over to the Kiwanis Club. Gus Denninger and Harold Gans built the figure from the 1960s to the 1990s. The 1994 Zozobra was built by Ray Sandoval and Jim Ipiotis. Members of the community assist with the construction of the Zozobra. IAS files include historic photographs of the sculpture's construction and installation from about the early 1990s. IAS files also include related articles from the Pasatiempo (New Mexico), Sept. 10-Sept. 16, 1993, the Albuquerque Journal, Sept. 11, 1993 and the Santa Fe New Mexican, Sept. 10, 1993, Sept. 11, 1993 and Sept. 8, 1994.
