Description:
An arch of stainless steel grids making up a network of lines and curves that are painted a variety of colors. Bronze and aluminum objects, which refer to the history and culture of Phoenix and the southwest, arts, science and technology, are suspended in the arch. These objects include a scorpion, a cow-skull, a saxophone, a violin, a wagon wheel, a falling Keith Haring man, a snake, a book, letters of the alphabet, math symbols, tragic/comic masks, a turtle, and a vase or urn. The arch is anchored on each side by two bases, each of which consists of four concrete piers or columns.

The sculpture was three years in the making and was funded through the City's Percent for Art program at a cost of $106,533. IAS files contain a related pamphlet from the Herberger Theater, "A Layering of Worlds." Nearby plaque reads: A LAYERING OF WORLDS, 1993/BROWER HATCHER, ARTIST/A PROJECT OF THE PHOENIX ARTS COMMISSION/PERCENT FOR ARTS PROGRAM/FUNDED BY CIVIC PLAZA.
