    A female figure representing Justice stands blindfolded, holding evenly balanced scales in her raised proper left hand. Her proper right hand holds a sword down at her side. The sculpture is installed in a niche on the courthouse facade.

    Remarks: 
    John Bates was the architect of the courthouse which was built in 1820. The sculpture is thought to be original to the building as it appears in a sketch of the courthouse dated to approximately the same year. The courthouse has undergone restoration in 1857, 1881, 1930, and 1962, but the sculpture has remained unaltered in its niche throughout. The sculpture was extensively damaged in a hurricane in 1938, but was repaired by Dean Eldridge. IAS files contain an article from Pilgrim Society Notes 17 (May 1966); a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form B questionnaire dated January 1991; a National Register Criteria Statement; and a newspaper article dated November 29, 1979.
