Erected by the Grand Haven Sesquicentennial Commission. Text on nearby plaque reads: WITH GENEROUS DONATIONS FROM THOSE LISTED ON THIS PLAQUE, THE GRAND HAVEN/SESQUICENTENNIAL COMMISSION HAS ERECTED THIS COMMEMORATIVE SCULPTURE/'STARBOARD TACK' AND MADE POSSIBLE THE BRASS REPLICA OF GRAND RIVER IN/WILLIAM M. FERRY LANDING. THESE ARE LASTING TRIBUTES TO THOSE HARDY/PIONEERS WHO FOUNDED GRAND HAVEN IN 1834, AND TO THOSE EARLY SETTLERS/WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR ITS GROWTH AND PROSPERITY. WINDS AND SAILS/WERE IMPORTANT TO THIS CITY'S DEVELOPMENT AT THE MOUTH OF GRAND/RIVER. THE SCULPTURE STANDS AS A CHALLENGE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS/TO CONTINUE MAINTAINING GRAND HAVEN'S PROGRESS./SCULPTURE DESIGNED BY TERRY WESTRA/LANDSCAPE DESIGNED BY M. C. SMITH & ASSOCIATES/SCULPTURE MANUFACTURED BY BASTIAN-BLESSING CO. OF GRAND HAVEN (followed by list of City Council, Manager, and Sesquicentennial Commission members).
