(On bronze plaque on front of base:) KEENE/WILL CHERISH IN PERPETUAL HONOR/THE MEMORY OF HER SONS/WHO FOUGHT FOR LIBERTY/AND THE INTEGRITY OF THE/REPUBLIC/ 1861-1865/THE HONOR/OF THE HEROIC DEAD/IS THE INSPIRATION OF/POSTERITY signed Founder's mark appears.
Description:
Full-length figure of a Union soldier. He wears a uniform, a long, belted overcoat and cap. He has a moustache. A bayonet hangs on the proper left side of the belted coat. A large pouch hangs from a strap over his proper left shoulder. A medallion shaped like an eagle decorates the strap. He holds the muzzle of a rifle with his proper right hand; the butt of the gun rests on the ground by his proper left foot. The bronze sculpture stands atop a granite base. The die of the base is topped by a moulded cornice; the sides of the die are paneled. The base ends in four steps.

Remarks:
The sculpture was funded by the town and cost approximately $7,000. Milmore created the sculpture which was cast by Ames Manufacturing Company. Arms and Harrington designed the base which was fabricated by Barnes.
