Ball, Marlin, Bridges & Associates, Inc. created the base for the sculpture. The Shuttlesworth sculpture is located in an area of Birmingham known as the Civil Rights District. The creation of the Civil Rights District was managed by the Diversified Project Management, Inc. of Birmingham. Edah Brittain Grover and her firm, Grover Harrison Harrison, as well as Grover E. Mouton, III redesigned the area covered by the Civil Rights District. Sculpture was moved from Wash, DC before installed in Birmingham. IAS files contain related articles from Birmingham Post-Herald (Birmingham, AL) July 8, 1992 and Birmingham News (Birmingham, AL), July 8, 1992 which discuss the architects plans for the redesigned Civil Rights District. IAS files also contain a copy of the 1991 Design Manual for the Birmingham Civil Rights District, prepared by Diversified Project Management. Rev. Shuttlesworth was Birmingham's Civil Rights Freedom Fighter.
