Description:
A Civil War soldier stands in uniform holding a furled flag at his proper left side with his proper left hand. He holds a sword in his proper right hand, point down. A tree stump is at his rear proper right side. The sculpture is mounted upon a tiered, decorated base with laurel wreaths on each side near the top and projections on the left and right sides. A bronze soldier is mounted on each projection. The soldier on the left side stands holding a cannon swab with his proper right hand. The soldier on the right side stands with his proper right hand over his heart and a sword strapped to his proper left hip.
On the front of the base is a bronze relief plaque depicting a Civil War battle scene. A line of soldiers moves forward on a battlefield, some with swords raised, as many soldiers clash in the background. On the rear of the base, a bronze relief plaque depicts a Civil War battle on the coast. Three-masted sailing ships are in the background and in the foreground, soldiers stand in a small boat ready to come ashore to join other soldiers fighting on land. On the front of the base below the relief plaque is an oval plaque of the seal of Pennsylvania.

Remarks:
The sculpture cost $10,000 and was installed by Blair County in honor of soldiers and sailors from the area who fought during the Civil War. The sculpture was fabricated after a design by E. F. Amick and was installed by Badger Brothers. John Baird of Philadelphia also worked on the project. The sculpture was dedicated during Hollidayburg's semi-centennial celebration on June 11, 1896. The sculpture was cleaned around 1984. IAS files contain an excerpt from the "History of Blair County."
