Description:
The memorial depicts the Archangel St. Michael holding a tablet in front of the proper left side of his body. His arms are folded across his chest and rest on top of the tablet. The top of the tablet is draped with garlands and a sword rests horizontally across the top of the tablet. St. Michael wears a helmet which is pushed down over his eyes and his wings are spread out behind him. The sculpture rests on a small square base adorned with garlands and draped with banners.

Remarks:
Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the sculpture, but did not live to see it finished. He collaborated with James Earle Fraser who created the figure and Henry Bacon who created the base. The inscription on the tablet held by St. Michael is from James 3:18.
