    Remarks:
Crosses were erected as the artist's memorial to his fallen comrades in World War II, the Crucifixion and in honor of Los Hermanos Penitentes, or the Penitentes Brotherhood, a Catholic sect of which the artist's father was a member. (The Brotherhood yearly erected a cross on the site in observance of Good Friday and Easter until 1923, when the last cross was burned. The site is currently used for public observances of these holy days. Reportedly, the site was used by American Indians for corn dances). Prior to being deeded to the Valley Improvement Association, the property belonged to the heirs of the Tome Land Grant who then sold it to Horizon Corporation. IAS files include related articles from the Albuquerque Journal, April 10, 1993, the Valencia County Villager, Aug. 26, 1993, April 7, 1994 and Nov. 3, 1994 and New Mexico Magazine, April 1994. Also see IAS files for related articles detailing the efforts of the Valley Improvement Association to restore and preserve the property in 1993 and 1994.
