    Remarks:
The sculpture, which is a visual metaphor for the life-force, was commissioned by Quality Forward, a volunteer organization established to improve the quality of life in and around Asheville. The sculpture was funded by a donation from Quality Forward, a grant of matching funds from the Community Arts Council of Western North Carolina, and contributions from individuals, groups and businesses. Berry Bates and her firm, Asheville Iron Works, fabricated the sculpture in accordance with Dirck Cruser's templates and mock-up. The sculpture was unveiled in July 1983 as part of the opening ceremonies of Asheville's annual street festival known as Bele Chere. IAS files contain a related article from the Arts Journal (Oct. 1982), which describes the commissioning of the sculpture and its funding.
