Each tree guard is intended to protect a young elm tree. 48 of the tree guards have a single figure attached, and 4 of the tree guards have 2 figures attached, for a total number of 56 figures. There are only 8 figure designs, which appear 7 times each. 42 of the tree guards have no figures attached.

SOS! files contain a copy of a newspaper article from the Arizona Republic, Dec. 12, 1990, which discusses the commissioning, funding, and creation of the sculptures; and a transcription of the text on a nearby marker. One figure was damaged and replaced by an identical figure.
