These plans began to be realized in 1980 when mayor Jane Byrne pledged a donation as a matching gift to build the sculpture. The remainder was raised from corporations, foundations, and individuals. The sculpture, entitled Miro's Chicago was dedicated on the artist's birthday April 20, 1981. Miro donated the design of his work as his present to the city of Chicago. Remarks:
In 1969 Brunswick Corporation commissioned model, but abandoned the plan due to financial considerations. In 1979 a new effort was launched to convert the maquette Miro had donated to the city of Chicago into a sculpture. The City of Chicago contributed 250,000 dollars which was more than matched with private funds. The bronze element was cast in Barcelona, Spain. Miro made the ceramic portions in his Majorca studio, with the help of ceramist-craftsman Joan Artigas. Artigas supervised the construction in Chicago and inserted the ceramic tiles.
