Remarks:
David was presented to the city by Andrew Langdon, Buffalo businessman and scholar. He saw the statue on exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1900. He negotiated with Neapolitan firm of bronze founders who had cast it, bought it, and exacted an agreement from them that they would not send another to the U.S. He contributed the pedestal as well as the statue jointly to the Buffalo Historical Society and the City.
