    Description: 
    Pediment composition of allegorical figures with draped, classical female in center with upraised hands--a personification of Kentucky--standing in front of a chair of state. Figures of Progress (kneeling pushing a winged wheel) and Plenty (with cornucopia overflowing with fruit and grain) are at her proper right; History (recording events), Art (with palette and brush in her hand) and Labor (a man stripped to the waist grasping a hammer) are on the proper left side of Kentucky. Additional figures representing the agricultural past of the state, and two Indians with a wolf, and other animals appear.

    Remarks: 
    The cornerstone for the new Capitol was laid in 1906. Frank M. Andrews was the Capitol architect. The north entrance pediment was designed by Charles Niehaus and executed by Peter A. Rossack. The pediment cost $40,000.
    IAS files contain excerpt from John H. Kleber, ed., "The Kentucky Encyclopedia," Lexington, KY: University Press of Kentucky, 1992; and Frank M. Kavanaugh's "Kentucky's New State Capitol," c. 1933. IAS files also contain articles from Herald-Leader (Lexington, KY), Feb. 1, 1993, Oct. 1994, and Kentucky Explorer, Nov. 1990, pg. 24. The Capitol and pediment were cleaned around 1993-1994 by Mid-Continental Restoration (Murfreesboro, TN). The cleaning included replacing two broken fingers on the Lady of Kentucky.
