    Description: 
    Monument consists of a shaft with a sundial. April 26, 1952 and 10:26 P. M., the date and time of the collision between the USS Hobson and USS WASP off the coast of the Azores, is engraved near the dial. The base is comprised of different colored stones which represent the thirty-eight home states of the drowned sailors. The shaft lists their names, rank, age and residence.

    Remarks: 
    Erected by the USS Hobson Memorial Society in memory of the sailors killed when the USS Hobson and the USS WASP collided on April 26, 1952. One hundred seventy-six men were killed when the collision sliced the Hobson in half, sinking her in four minutes. The Hobson was built at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and was stationed in Charleston. IAS files include a related article from the Post-Courier (Charleston, SC), Sept. 26, 1977.
