Remarks:
The sculpture cost approximately $3,000 and was installed by the Chismore Women's Relief Corps, Post 110, Grand Army of New York, in memory of those who served during the Civil War. The sculpture was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1906. The Women's Relief Corps installed curbing around the sculpture in 1907. This was subsequently removed to make way for a road widening project. The soldier figure is sometimes referred to as "Private Smith." In 1991 the sculpture was cleaned by Day-Applegate Monument Service. IAS files contain related articles the Ilion Citizen, May 31, 1906; and the Evening Telegram, May 28, 1960 and May 24, 1975.
