Remarks:
The artist, Abraham Wolfe Davidson, was a college student who entered and won a sculpture competition for the portrait of Thomas Green Clemson. Due to lack of funds during the depression, his 1936 concrete model was not immediately cast in bronze. It was Davidson's dream that came true in 1966 when the bronze casting was completed and the sculpture replaced the concrete model that had stood at the same location. The concrete model was then intentionally destroyed. IAS files contain copy of Greenville News (Greenville, South Carolina), July 9, 1966, which has a photograph showing Davidson a making plaster mold of his concrete sculpture from which he and John Acorn prepared a plaster model for the bronze.
