The sculpture was erected by the Spanish government to commemorate Spanish general Bernnardo de Galvez's contribution to the American Revolution. He helped the American colonies with guns and other supplies by making expeditions to secure the Mississippi River as a free trade route against British troops. His land an sea raids which drove the British from the Mississippi River ended British dominance in the Southeast and established a firm bond between Spain and the United States. In 1777, Galvez became Louisiana's 16th governor.
