Remarks:
The sculpture is a replica of the original statue located in France in front of the Rheims Cathedral. It is a gift from the society of French women (Le Lyceum Societie des Femmes de France) to the women of the United States. IAS files contain an article from the Washington Star, May 29, 1938; and an article from the New York Tribune Illustrated Supplement, June 24, 1900 which discusses another cast of the sculpture to be installed at the Eglise de St. Augustin in Paris. The sword has been stolen repeatedly over the years. The Goode publication contains a photograph which shows the sculpture with the sword that was missing at the time of the SOS survey. The sword was replaced in 2011, but was stolen again in the summer of 2016. IAS files contain an article from Washington Post, Sept. 25, 2016, pg. C1-C2 noting the most recent theft of the sword, and illustrating the sculpture with the sword and without the sword. For related articles see Washington Post, June 7, 1922, pg. 9 and Evening Star (Washington, D.C.), Nov. 17, 1925.
