    Remarks:
Roger Brooke Taney was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1836, a position he held for nearly three decades. The most famous opinion he wrote was the Dred Scott Decision in 1854. Prior to being appointed to the Supreme Court, he served as Attorney General of Maryland, U.S. Attorney General, and Secretary of the Treasury under President Andrew Jackson.
The sculpture is a recast of Rinehart's 1871 portrait of Taney installed in front of the State House in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1887, Mr. W. T. Walters had this replica made as a gift to the City of Baltimore for Mt. Vernon Place.
