    Description: 
    "Dressed in a suit of black, the figure of an elderly gentleman, with thin gray hair, is standing on a rostrum, in an attitude of making a speech. His body is turned to the right...His left hand is lifting a document from among others lying on a desk covered with an ample green drapery, and his right hand is held before the breast. On the floor at the right are books and a roll of documents, and behind the desk is a red screen, above which is seen the top of a door. An armchair, upholstered in green stands in the left background near a column."

    Remarks: 
    The painting was exhibited at Norman's bookstore in New Orleans in 1847. It was purchased in 1863 by the City Council of Brooklyn. Since 1865, it has been on display in Brooklyn Borough Hall in it's original gilded frame.
