Confederate Monument, (sculpture). Artist:  Unknown, sculptor. Title:  Confederate Monument, (sculpture). Dates:  1904. Relocated June 1, 1961. Medium:  Sculpture: bronze; Shaft: granite (?) Base: reinforced concrete. Dimensions:  Sculpture: approx. H. 7 ft.; Base: approx. W. 6 ft. x D. 6 ft.; Overall: approx. H. 25 ft. (40,000 lbs.). Description:  Full-length figure of a uniformed Confederate soldier stands atop a tall shaft and tiered base. The figure holds his rifle in both hands, horizontally, in front of him. Subject:  History -- United States -- Civil War Figure male -- Full length Occupation -- Military -- Soldier Dress -- Uniform -- Military Uniform Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- North Carolina -- Edenton Sculpture Owner:  Town of Edenton, End of South Broad Street, Edenton, North Carolina Provenance:  Formerly located Chowan County Courthouse, Edenton, North Carolina 1904-1961. Remarks:  Erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The cornerstone was laid June 3, 1904. The monument was originally located at the Chowan County Courthouse, on the Courthouse green. It was moved in June 1961, when the courthouse grounds were relandscaped following the restoration of the building. IAS files include a related article from the Virginian-Pilot, June 5, 1961.
