(Ten names and death dates, arranged by unit)/ ANDERSONVILLE/ THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY/VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS,/IN COMMEMORATION OF THE BRAVE MEN/FROM THE TOWN OF GRANBY,/WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THE UNION/IN THE WAR OF THE GREAT REBELLION./ERECTED JULY 4, 1868. (West side of pedestal:) "They that sow in tears will reap in joy." (eight names with dates of death)/SHARPSBURG (North side, top of plinth:) U.S. Geological Survey in co-operation with the State of Connecticut Elevation above sea level 215 feet 182 W 1923 250 dollars fine for disturbing this mark (North side of pedestal:) "Death is swallowed up in victory."     Description: 
    A Union soldier stands, dressed in uniform, with visored cap, belted jacket and long overcoat, worn over the shoulders. He originally held a rifle, now missing. The soldier has a large moustache and beard and looks downward. The figure is mounted on a two-tiered base set on a larger tapered, tiered pedestal.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was funded by public subscription and honors men from the town who died in the Civil War. The monument was erected prior to the Park's creation in 1875. Conrads is believed to have sculpted the figure; Keller is believed to have designed the pedestal. The rifle has been missing since the mid-1940s. IAS files contain dedication program. Unpublished materials relating to the monument may be on file at the Salmon Brook Historical Society.
