    Provenance:
Formerly located Iowa State University, Ross Hall, South Courtyard, Ames, Iowa 50011
    Remarks:
Funded with a National Endowment for the Arts, Art in Public Places grant of $7,500 given in 1975 to Iowa State University. The sculpture was commissioned for the newly built campus building posthumously honoring Earl D. Ross, professor emeritus of history. A representative from the National Endowment for the Arts joined the selection committee, along with members of the Ross family, to commission a sculpture that complemented the new Ross building and would serve as a gateway to the southeastern entry to the campus. The sculpture was Iowa State University's first modern sculpture dedicated on campus. The sculpture was designed with a sidewalk running through the open center of the sculpture, so that people could walk under the sculpture. However, the sidewalk was not completed for the 1976 dedication, and due to financial constraints, the university opted to landscape the area until funds were available to complete the sidewalk project. Originally the sculpture was primed with red paint, with a second protective coat of dark brown paint. In 2009, the sculpture was removed for restoration and was to be reinstalled in a new location.
