    Description: 
    A bronze allegorical figure draped in classical robes is seated on a granite bench with its proper right arm resting on the back of the bench and its proper left arm resting on a scroll unfurled across its lap. The figure's robes are loosely draped across the back of the granite bench. The bench is adorned at each end with carved wings and a shallow bronze urn.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was given by Richard Billings, class of 1897, as a memorial to Noah Webster whose deeds and interests so resembled those of his own father, Frederick Billings (who helped found the University of California). The quote inscribed on the back of the bench is Webster's dying testimony. The sculpture cost $25,000. IAS files contain a copy of the Amherst College cataloging sheet for the monument.
