Remarks:
Sculpture commemorates the school's football team, the "Elbert County Blue Devils," and was completed as part of the project to build the Granite Bowl in the summer of 1961. The $12,000 project was initiated by Ben Sutton, a local real estate man and former Parks Director for the City of Elberton, and was continued by members of the Boosters Club. Elbert County Middle School was once the Elberton High School (also known as White High School or Central High). IAS files contain a full transcription of names on front of marker, and related article from The Elberton Graniteer (Summer 1962), pg. 6, 7.
