Remarks:
Nearby plaque reads: On March 23, 1986, at this Cathedral,/Jews and Christians of this Capital walked through/the portal of reconciliation, from fear to/friendship, to build together/a New Community/created in atonement in love and peace./"Portal," a sculpture by Robert Blood,/commissioned by Christians and Jews,/stands as memorial to this event and/in joyful anticipation of/the consecration of its promise./Dedicated, March 19, 1989 (Hebrew text)
The sculpture was commissioned by the Jewish-Christian Dialogue Committee. The sculpture commemorates the Palm Sunday service of March 23, 1986, during which Bishop Howard J. Hubbard of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, asked forgiveness for centuries of anti-Semitic church teachings. The sculpture cost approximately $30,000 and was paid for through private donations. IAS files contain related articles from the Times Union (Albany, NY), March 5, 1989; March 20, 1989; Oct. 3, 1988. IAS files also contain a dedication program.
