Commissioned by the Parks Committee of the City of Providence, in adherance with the bequest of Betsy Williams. Roger Williams (1603?-1683) was the founder of Rhode Island and a proponent of religious freedom. Male figure is a seven and one half-foot version of the figure of Roger Williams in the U. S. Capitol. IAS files contain copies from Robert Freeman and Vivienne Lasky's "Hidden Treasure: Public Sculpture in Providence," Providence: Rhode Island Bicentennial Foundation, 1980, pg. 63-64, which discusses the dedication; discusses the original placement of the bronze scroll, book, laurel wreath, and shield inscribed with an anchor; includes a reproduction of a 1907 photograph of the monument, which shows these small bronze elements; and states that these small bronze elements have been missing for over 30 years. IAS files also contain copies from David Marshall's "The Jewel of Providence: An Illustrated History of Roger Williams Park 1871-1961," Providence, RI: Providence Parks Department, 1987, pg. 29 and 31, which also discusses the dedication.
