GANIERE (On proper right side of figure, on bronze base:) Cast by American Art Bronze/Foundry Chicago, Ill (On metal plaque on south side of base:) MAJOR GEN. ANTHONY WAYNE/ORIGINALLY DEDICATED BY THE/CITY OF FORT WAYNE/JULY 4, 1918/SCULPTOR -- George E. Ganiere signed Founder's mark appears. Description:  An equestrian portrait of General Anthony Wayne holding the horse's reins in his proper left hand. Originally he held a sword in his proper right hand, but the sword is now missing. The sculpture is installed on a low rectangular base. Remarks:  General Anthony Wayne was an officer during the American Revolution. The commission was originally given to Charles J. Mulligan, but he died before the work was begun. Money for the monument was raised through an annual tax levy. Originally, this sculpture of Fort Wayne's founder was installed in Hayden Park, but in 1973 it was relocated to Freimann Square where it was installed on a new base. The original base, a large granite block with bronze relief plaques, was left in Hayden Park, which became part of the grounds at Harmer School. IAS files contain newspaper articles from the Ft.
