    Provenance:
Formerly located Bryant Park, New York, New York 1894-1928.
    Remarks:
Dr. Sims, known as the father of modern gynecology, was noted for developing new surgical methods and instruments. He pioneered the use of silver wire for sutures in 1849. He founded the Woman's Hospital of New York. In the fall of 1894 this sculpture was erected on a Victorian-style stone base in Reservoir Square, now Bryant Park. When the park fell into disrepair around 1928, the work was put in storage until 1934 when it was found beneath a tarpaulin under the Williamsburg Bridge. It was then place on a new stone base in Central Park facing the Academy of Medicine. The new base was created by Aymar Embury II. For a photograph of the work on its original base, see the Gayle and Cohen publication. For a photograph of the work with its new base in its current site, see Lederer publication and Inventory image files. Shortly after Dr. Sims death in 1883, a journal of surgery, the Medical Record, launched a subscription for a commemorative statue. Within a year 10,000 dollars was raised for the erection of the statue. Additional information is available at the Central Park Conservancy's Bronze Conservation Program located at 1 East 104th Street. For further information see the New York Times, April 7, 1887; Oct. 21, 1894; Feb. 17, 1934; and Oct. 21, 1934.
