Colossal plaster tablet, consisting of figures in high relief, with a
portrait
of
Robert
Gould
Shaw
on horse in foreground, with soldiers in background and an angel figure flying overhead. Colonel
Shaw
is depicted in campaign uniform and fatigue cap, seated on horse, with sword at his side in proper right hand. In the background are ranks of marching black soldiers. They carry bedrolls on their backpacks and are holding rifles over the shoulders. They are preceded by a drummer boy. An allegorical female angel figure floats above the figures, with her proper left hand extended outward and her proper right hand clasping laurel. Her head is turned downward; her drapery is horizontally arranged. The plaster cast is set within a wooden frame, part of a protective structure.

Remarks:
Third and final version plaster cast of the
Shaw
Memorial, Boston Common (IAS record 76007839). The sculpture was exhibited at the Buffalo, New York Pan American Exposition of 1901 and remained on exhibit at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo until 1919. In 1997, the sculpture was placed on long-term loan to the National Gallery of Art. IAS files contain brochure "Augustis Saing-Gaudens' Memorial to

and the Massachsuetts Fifty-foruth Regiment," National Gallery of Art, Sept. 21-Dec. 14, 1997. IAS files also contain related newspaper clipping, Washington Post, Sept. 22, 1997, pg. B1.
