    Remarks:
The monument commemorates General Winfield Scott, a resident of Elizabeth, New Jersey, for whom Winfield Scott Park is named after. He fought in the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and was commander of the Union Forces at the outbreak of the Civil War. The star emblem on base honors his service in the War of 1812. The effort to erect a monument to him took nearly forty years, beginning with the incorporation of the Winfield Scott Monument Association of Elizabeth in 1907. By 1912, the Association had accumulated $601.12 through public subscription, and had hoped to erect an equestrian monument to Scott. However, no monument was erected, and by 1941 the Association's banked funds had grown with interest to $1,454. The monument was eventually erected in 1947 by a committee. The installation site is near former location of Scott's house which was razed in 1926.
