The allegorical figure group depicts Erin seated between her sons, Poetry and Patriotism. In her lap Erin weaves a wreath out of laurel and oak leaves. Patriotism, on her proper right, is dressed in a military uniform and holds a branch of oak leaves in his proper left hand. Poetry, on Erin's proper left, holds a lyre in his proper left hand and laurel leaves hin his proper right hand. His proper right hand rests on Erin's lap. This allegorical figure group is mounted on a small semicircular base against a granite wall. On the other side of the granite wall, a bust of John Boyle O'Reilly is mounted on a tall pedestal. Each side of the granite wall is engraved with a woven Celtic design. At the base of the memorial are three steps and a small chain fence.

    Remarks:
John Boyle O'Reilly was an Irish poet and patriot who was a major figure in the Finian Movement to free Ireland from British rule. When he was imprisoned in western Australia for his political actions, he passed the time by writing poems. He later escaped from prison and landed in Boston where he apprenticed in a printing office and worked as a clerk for the Inman Line Steamship Company. He also organized the Papyrus Club and gave lectures, but he was always aware of the political prisoners left behind in Australia. Later, with the help of several friends, he was able to rescue six political prisoners.
The memorial was originally located in the intersection of Fenway and Boylston Streets, but it has been moved back about twenty feet to the side of Fenway Street. IAS files contain a July 8, 1982 conservation treatment proposal prepared by David Phillips Art Casting and subsequent correspondence from the Boston Art Commission regarding the relocation and conservation of the memorial.
